Japanese newspapers say he has told dealers that yield to pressure to inspect the braking system of up to 270,000 models of the third generation Prius.
The owners of petrol and electric cars have complained that the brakes seem to fail on bumpy roads in the cold.

Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper said Toyota had considered voluntarily fixing cars, but instead opted for a withdrawal of the hopes of restoring public confidence.
Toyota did not confirm the reports today, but a spokesman said: “We will make an announcement soon on the measures it intends to take.”
The Prius, which has become an icon of green design, was Japan’s best-selling car last year.
The braking problem – a failure attributed to software – is also likely to affect the Prius owners in the UK, as all cars sold worldwide are manufactured in Japan and China. About 5,000 have been sold here since August.
There have been 180 complaints of brake problems with the Prius in the U.S. and Japan, and the defect has been linked to at least five accidents.

Which affects 180,865 cars in Britain, but the owners have warned it could take up to four weeks to be notified. More than 10,000 drivers have tried to use Toyota hotline and website and many claim lines were jammed.

Toyota estimates that the cost in lost sales and repairs in the memory at £ 1.25billion, but that will increase markedly with the Prius now engaged.
The auto giant reported a profit before tax of £ 1.56billion for the last quarter of 2009 and recognized hybrids to its success.
